US: Monte Vista Potato Growers shipping from new facility

mvpgjpgWrapping up the 2016 harvest in early October, Monte VISTA Potato Growers near Monte Vista, CO, started shipping mid-October, utilizing the operation’s new line and 15,000-square-foot warehouse that were in place for the season’s start. According to General Manager Jason Tillman, “Everything is working well.” Tillman said in late November the crop is of average size, with “some lots really big and some smaller.” New this year are organic Canelas, yellows and reds that are being run through White Rock Specialties in Mosca, CO. In August Tillman said the 2016 variety split was 70 percent russets, 25 percent yellows and 5 percent reds, with the organics making up about 1 percent of the total. The Monte VISTA facility is using a new bagger to provide a full range of pack sizes. The organics are available in 3- and 5-pound bags. He said the line includes two automated Celox sizer/sorters, with labor cited as a primary reason for expansion, along with the ability to do specialty packs. More
