Potato area in Flanders reaches record high

The Dutch news outlet Akkerwijzer reports that in Belgium, Flemish arable farmers have again planted more potatoes this year. The total potato area of ​​55,643 hectares represents a new record, according to preliminary area figures for agricultural crops 2019 of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

While the area of ​​seed potatoes only rises very slightly from 1,460 to 1,477 hectares (+ 1.16%), the increase in consumer potatoes is considerable. That area will grow from 49,954 hectares in 2018 to 54,165 hectares this year, an increase of 8.4 percent. 

Added to the hectares in French-speaking Wallonia, the total Belgian area this year is close to 100,000 hectares.
